One of the first questions Lynn and I ask our clients is, “If it wasn’t an issue of money, or lack of money, describe exactly what your life would look like.”
In other words, from the time you wake up until the time you decide to go to bed, describe your day-to-day activities. Describe where you’d ultimately live. Describe your family life, your surroundings, your lifestyle, and all your comfort toys. What kinds of activities, work and play, would you now be doing? What would you do if you knew everything was possible, and it wasn’t an issue about money, or any lack of financial security?
Rarely do we ever hear a clear and direct answer.
Instead we watch eyes roll, heads bob around searching for some magical answer, or a quizzical glaze taking over their facial expressions as if this was a trick question. After a long silence, they simply reply, “I don’t know, and then almost immediately they’ll respond by saying they would take a vacation, buy a new car, pay off their mortgage, credit cards, or school loan, or finally take the entire family to Disneyland.
Today, many who are victims of our wild economy say they’d be happy just finding a job, let alone one that pays a livable wage they once had. Others mention that they’d like go back to school to learn some new job-related skills. A very rare few indicate that they want to feel happy, loved, useful, or healthier.
Know we all know the human mind is an amazing complex entity and not everyone wants the same thing. Even when it isn’t an issue of money, or lack of it, we all want something different. The simple truth seems to prevail that most people are bound so tightly with their day-to-day reality, that anything beyond those routines seem unrealistic and unobtainable, so why even bother to have a dream.
When we ask people if they have dreams, the vast majority immediately discuss bizarre situations they remembered after waking up. Rarely will they interpret this question as having aspirations about what they really want out of life, or what they see themselves doing 1-5-10 years from now. Life, like dreams is simply viewed as a spontaneous, undirected, and uncontrollable event.

Preparing for a new adventure can add undue stress to one’s life, especially when so many other things need to be done at the same time. Therefore, we need to place all of our energies on things that really matter.
If your desk is cluttered and you can’t find anything, doing business can be extremely frustrating, a waste of time, and very unproductive. The same is true of your mind when it’s cluttered with a million thoughts. So here is a preliminary exercise we would like Part 1 - Clearing Your Mental Desk

Take a piece of paper and write down everything that’s on your mind. Write down all the things you’re worried about, concerned about, as well as, all the things that come up in your mind when you’re trying to go to sleep. We mean everything that’s on your mind. Write for about 15-minutes straight and try to identify all the things that are really important to you at this time. You’ll be amazed at what you see if you take this exercise seriously.
Come on now – 15 minutes of some serious soul searching. After all, these are the things that occupy your mind anyway, so get them down on paper where you can see how your mind spends its time and energy. We respect your privacy and will not ask you to divulge any information you prefer not to discuss.
